January 2014 Update

Dear Friends of Rio del Cambio

Happy New Year! hope the coming year brings you health and happiness and a warm place to ride out this cold weather!

My husband, Doug and I will be travelling to Nicaragua on Thursday January 30 for 2 weeks. It will be a very full schedule of meetings and introductions, as well as lots of time with the people of Citalapa including a day at the beach, taking pictures of all of the children for the Sponsorship Program, and the start of a new building project.

Thanks to a very generous donation of $10,000 ($9000 US after exchange and transfer fees), we will beginning the construction of a new building in early February. This accounts for about half of the total cost to build Phase 1 of a Community Centre. Completion of the building will occur as fundraising and donations permit. The new facility will be used as a education classroom, sewing centre for the Women’s Co-operative and shelter from the harsh environment when needed. We would like to express our very sincere gratitude and appreciation for this wonderful donation.

I have received several emails and phone calls regarding Sponsorship Program renewals. The school year in Nicaragua begins the second Monday of February and finishes the last Friday of November. Therefore, sponsorship donations to Rio del Cambio during 2013 where allotted to the 2013 budget. Typically, sponsorships are paid either in January as the new school year begins, or in July during our Fundraising Festival which is about half way through the school year. The cost of sponsoring a child is only $75/year.

If however you would like to help with the cost of sending your child and their family to the beach, we would invite you to donate $100. Donations can be made online here or by etransfer to info@riodelcambio.org and of course by cheque made out to “Rio del Cambio”, 3714 20th Sideroad, Innisfil, Ontario L9S 2Y1

I would also like to thank Kelly McBride from the Barrie Police Services. The Barrie Police Services very generously donated surplus t-shirts from an event they hosted. These are new t-shirts in adult sizes. The men and women of Citalapa will be very excited and grateful for this donation. Doug and I will be carrying 4 large bags of donated clothing most of which are for the younger children. Thank you to all who graciously collected gently used summer clothing and sandals during the past year. They will be put to good use!

If you are not planning on sponsoring your child in 2014, I would really appreciate a quick email so that I can look for a new sponsor. It is our mission to ensure that every child in the Learning Program is sponsored and knows that there is someone that cares about them, and has a picture of them in hand. We respect sometimes your giving choices change. We do however encourage you to give somewhere if not here. Your contributions make a real difference in the world where so many are in need.

I would also like to challenge each of you to help Rio del Cambio expand it’s community. This is one act of kindness that will not cost you any money! Simply by forwarding this website address to family and friends that you think might be interested in our work, you can significantly impact the number of people that support Rio del Cambio. Funds are important to our success but education and awareness are crucial to fulfilling our mission.

I will be posting on Facebook during my travels so I invite you to join us at Facebook/riodelcambio, and sign up at here to ensure you receive future newsletters. Please feel free to contact me at info@riodelcambio.org if you have any questions or comments.

Thank you to all,

Sincerely,
Kari Williams
