August 2013 Update

Dear Friends of Rio del Cambio

I am very excited to share the news that water filters have now been delivered to all of the homes in Citalapa plus a few just over the river. Last week, Project Manager Elias Gaitan completed the delivery of 35 filters to those families still in need. We have a number of children that attend the Rio del Cambio Learning Program from the village across the river even though it is a different municipality. The reputation of the program is very positive and we refuse to turn the children away. As a result, we have also provided these families with a water filter for their homes in hopes of reducing the epidemic of illness. This brings the total number of filters in the village to over 100 since November 2011.

Clean water is vital to the health and well-being of all but sadly, it is not easy to come by in places like Citalapa. Thanks to your support and generosity, we are one step closer to significantly improving the short and long term health of over 600 people in the village of Citalapa. If we can reduce the amount of illness due to contaminated water, we can begin to identify other illnesses and address them more quickly and effectively.

Below are pictures of the people receiving their filters. Please know that they are extremely grateful and appreciate your ongoing support.

We also purchased and delivered seed and fertilizer to the 23 farmers in the village. They will begin planting by hand this week, and will hope and pray for enough, but not too much rain over the next 3 months. The crop that they harvest in November is, for many, their main source of income for the entire year. The crop will provide food for their family as well as an income to live on.

We are very pleased with the progress we have made in just over 3 years. But there is still much to be done to help the people of Citalapa find a level of dignity and existence they so richly deserve. Thank you for your interest and support of Rio del Cambio and it’s ongoing work in Citalapa, Nicaragua.

Sincerely,
Kari Williams
